Professional Background and Personal Journey
I moved to Tampa Bay in 2019 to join the best morning television show, “Great Day Live” on 10 Tampa Bay as a host. I’m a New Orleans, Louisiana native, so I’m used to humidity and hurricanes. Television is not something I have always wanted to do. In fact, I have always hated public speaking! Early on in life, I thought I’d be a professional ballerina, which I studied in college before changing my major to journalism. Now, I speak to locals on television every day. Sometimes, the thing that scares you the most is what you are destined to do.
Local Knowledge: Coffee and Hidden Gems
With a name like Java, I have to drink coffee! St. Petersburg is home to my favorite coffee shops, Bandit and Book and Bottle. Bandit’s pastry and breakfast items are delicious. My go-to drink is the vanilla latte. I love Book and Bottle because it’s so many things in one. You can go there to find a new read, a unique bottle of wine, or you can sit down and enjoy tea and the best macarons in town.
It still surprises me how many locals have never been to Weeki Wachee. The Sunshine State has so much natural beauty, and the springs are no exception. Sometimes, you get to see manatees. It’s so uniquely Florida. Hostess is absolutely a hidden jewel in St. Pete’s Grand Central district! It’s an adorable gift shop, wine bar and micro event space inside a 1930s bungalow. The Floridian Social is a great venue that I don’t think a lot of people know about. Talented artists are coming through its doors constantly.
Dining and Culinary Recommendations
As someone who comes from a long line of Chefs from New Orleans and a major foodie, I love every second of it! It seems every time I turn around, there is another grand opening happening. I am in love with Psomi. The food, ambiance and staff are incredible. Perhaps that’s why it earned a Bib Gourmand from Michelin in addition to the guide naming the owner, Christina Theofilos, Florida’s Young Chef of the Year. My go-to dish is the lamb burger. It is packed with flavor and presented beautifully. If I still have room left, I’m ordering the saganaki or spanakopita.
In St. Petersburg, I love Allelo; the beef tartare is a must. I also love Sunda New Asian in Midtown Tampa. I love the bulgogi roti tacos, yellowtail jalapeño and the lobster wagyu sushi.
